So, you may not know my story and why I created phattlife (which stands for Practical Holistic Approach to Training and Life). I was passing out. I’d stand up and then black out. It was scary. I didn’t know what was wrong. I avoided going to the doctor (I hate going to the doctor and will share why in another post) until one of my blackouts caused a large mirror to fall and it barely missed me. I took that as my ‘sign’ to see a doctor to find out why I’m blacking out. Well, as I’d predicted, that appointment led to me seeing over 20 doctors! A wonderful PA suggested I take a tilt table test. I thought, that sounds pretty simple. You lay on a table and they raise you up a few times and I’ll find out why I’m blacking out all of the time. OMG!!! THAT WAS THE WORST TEST EVER!!! Now, if you don’t have the condition I have, then it’s probably a piece of cake. BUT IF YOU HAVE THE CONDITION I HAVE IT’S HORRIBLE!!!!! The test showed that I CLEARLY have POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome coupled with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). Yeah!! I have a name for this mysterious condition that almost caused me to lose my life at the hands of a heavy mirror :/ So doc, fix me! Ha! I was basically left to figure it out on my own (not by the PA but the doctors-the PA left 🙁 ) because there are no pills for my condition(s). Yea, I could have prescriptions prescribed for some of the symptoms I have but I wanted to know WHY I developed this condition. Well, our medical system isn’t set up to treat the root cause but rather our system is set up to treat symptoms and that’s stupid. So, I had to do my own research. One of the things that kept showing up was changing my diet. I did. I lost 50lbs! Woot woot!! I kept it off for several years until…..it started coming back 🙁 I couldn’t understand what the heck was going on!!! On top of the weight gain, I had these debilitating hot flashes!! I’m not kidding, they were AWFUL!!! I finally went to my gyno to ask about this issue and she ran some test and said “you have no hormones, no wonder you’re sick”. WAIT…WHA??? I’m a human being!! How can I ‘lose’ my hormones?!! How does that even happen?!! I blew her off as a quack and went home. I suffered for about a year and couldn’t take it anymore. I called my doctor again and they ran more test and the tests yielded the same results. So, reluctantly I agreed to add a hormone supplement to my regimen. I’ve been on them for about three years and I STILL DON’T FEEL BETTER AND I’M STILL FAT! The hot flashes are gone but that’s it. So, I did my own research to find out what can cause hormonal issues and OMG! CHEMICALS!! THEY ARE EVERYWHERE!! Food! Makeup! Skincare! Haircare! You name it! The sad reality is, we can’t avoid chemicals BUT we can reduce our exposure to them and that’s what I’m going to do.
