5 Tips to End Sugar Cravings

So, in my last post, I shared how I USED TO BE a sugaraholic.  I received several messages from people saying they wished they weren’t addicted to sugar and they wish they could eat the way I was eating. You may see me working out and eating salads now BUT, it hasn’t always been that way.  I LOVED sugar!  So much so, that I became a pretty good baker.  Yeah, I wanted REAL desserts and not store-bought ones.  I also needed to have something sweet after lunch and dinner.  It was almost like I HAD to have something sweet; like a true addict.  It was pretty bad.  I hadn’t developed any health issues other than being overweight at that time, thankfully.  After my father died from cancer, I learned that his siblings also died from various types of cancers. That’s when I decided to research cancer prevention and everything I read pointed to diet and exercise.  More importantly, I read that many types of cancer thrive on sugar!  That was enough for me to exorcise this sugar demon.  It wasn’t easy, but I’m proud to say that I did it and you can to!  Here are five ways to kick the habit (I’m not a doctor or a nutritionist but a certified fitness trainer and I’m sharing what I did that helped me kick my sugar habit: ***EDIT-I DON’T KNOW WHY THERE ARE WEIRD SPACES THROUGHOUT THE BLOG ☹️ SORRY!!

  1. Read the ingredients list.  THIS. IS. HUUUUUGGGEEEE! When I had local clients (I’m an online Coach now), I’d take them to the grocery store for a lesson on reading food labels.  You see, the food industry knows we are busy and we don’t have time to read so, they’ll add catchy, gimmicky words on the front of the package (SUGAR FREE! GLUTEN FREE! LOW FAT! HEART HEALTHY!), so that you’ll buy the product they are peddling.  What you don’t know is, they have to be pretty truthful (they are not completely truthful, though) with what the ingredients are in their product.  The problem is, they use a lot of science-y words or they’ll use a name that sounds legit and healthy, but it really isn’t and this is especially true when it comes to sugar.  There are about 61 different names for sugar!!! IKR!! Crazy! If you’re trying to avoid sugar like I was, or you have diabetes and your life depends on you avoiding sugar, this can be tricky.  It’s not just the white stuff, but it goes by many names.  Again, I teach my clients this but here the picture above that I found that has some of the names of sugar that the food industry uses and it’s a great step in the right direction.
  2. Now that you know what to look for, you must stop eating it.  I know this sounds simple, but it’s not. You see, all carbs convert to sugar in our bodies, whether is fruit or whole wheat bread, it can cause you to crave sugar if you eat it.  So, if you’re trying to stop your     addiction to sugar, you have to treat it like the drug that it is and avoid ALL FORMS OF SUGAR.  WAIT!!! DON’T YOU EXIT THIS      BLOG!! I hear you!  I get it!  It sounds really hard, but listen, it’s not hard.  Fighting cancer is hard. Losing a loved one is hard.  Not        eating sugar is just a challenge.  YOU CAN DO THIS.  Also, you only need to eschew ALL FORMS OF SUGAR for about a month to kick  the habit.  That means no bread, no fruit (a 1/2 cup of berries is ok), no yogurt, no juices, not sweeteners, no honey, no starchy vegetables. NO SUGAR!
  3. Now what do I eat?  Well, for about a month, eat proteins, non starchy vegetables, healthy fats.  I know, it sounds boring but it doesn’t    have to be.  There are tons of low carb recipes on Pinterest and Uncle Google so definitely check them out for some fun recipes.  Plus, you’ll lose some weight and will feel great! #Winning
  4. Add some healthy probiotics to your diet to feed your gut. Webmd says “Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good      for your health, especially your digestive system. We usually think of these as germs that cause diseases. But your body is full of    bacteria, both good and bad. Probiotics are often called “good” or “helpful” bacteria because they help keep your gut healthy.  Also, it’s great to couple that with a great greens supplement and enzymes that’ll help you absorb nutrients or a very nutrient-densed meal                        replacement can work wonders becomes it will supply your body with the micronutrients it needs and it’ll help you get over the hump when a craving hits because it’s delicious!
  5. Workout!  Working out actually helps take your mind off of sugar and it produces happy hormones (which you’ll definitely need when you are kicking an addiction).  Find something to do!  I worked out at home because I dont’ really like gyms and working out at home, for me, takes away alllll excuses.  So find some type of workout to do or you can use what I used so that there’re no excuses.

To take it a step further, I became a certified fitness trainer so that I can learn about nutrition and exercise and I can help others on their wellness journey!
